I just turned sixteen this week so I'm looking to eventually get a part time job. I still have a full school day so evenings and weekends are best. I'd like a "real" job now because baby and dog sitting isn't cutting it anymore as much as I'd like it to because I enjoy it.
So does anyone have suggestions? Of course there's retail, I'm considering something on the Plaza but I don't know what working there is actually like just based on their website. Any kind of free-lance things I could do? My strengths are writing and art oriented. I live in the Waldo area and would like to keep close for now. I feel like there could be a lot of unique opportunities out there but I don't know where to start looking! |

| lost kitty in midtown? |
[Nov. 6th, 2009|09:45 pm] |
There is a kitten who's been hanging around outside my apartment since sometime yesterday (that's when I first noticed, anyway). I'm at 39th and Clark.
(s)he is very friendly, gray and white with long hair and kind of a smallish face. About the same size as my cat, who's 5 months old. Very friendly, obviously belongs to someone, and mewing rather pathetically. If you think this might be your kitty, please comment!
I will post pictures tomorrow. thanks! |

Is there any area (midtown and beyond) grocery storey that will take their plastic bags back? No moral outrage here folks, we've got our reusable ones, but sometimes sh*t happens and you end up with plastic bags. Now, does anyone take 'em back?
Seems like every Dominics and Jewel in Chicago had a spot for them to be recycled right when you come in the door. I'm finding Kansas City isn't so accomidating. Bridging the Gap tells me that the bags are not recyclable through them.
Thanks in advance. |

| lawyer? |

I am looking for a recommendation for a lawyer in KC. I just got my car towed for having expired tags, and I am just totally overwhelmed by dealing with this process and don't know what to do or how to handle.
I am assuming that there might be a lawyer who is able to guide me through this process and hold my hand a little, as I am incredibly intimidated by this whole situation and no one really seems able to assist.
Thanks for any ideas. |

Where's good and inexpensive that I can get this done? |

A lot of things happened in the last few weeks. First, I've been fighting off a pretty stubborn flu for the past week or so. I have no idea if it's H1N1, but it seems like something is making it's way around the schools and work-places. On top of that, I started developing an inflamed wrist tendon from scrunching my hands together to type on my small laptop at work. I had to get a wrist brace and an ergonomic keyboard so my wrist would stop killing me when I bent it more than 90 degrees. Dit Dat Jow medicine is helping it heal nicely.
Second, my father-in-law recently had a massive heart-attack and passed away earlier last week. He fought like a lion all the way to the end, and many of the medical staff were surprised that he lasted that long. Although he lived a full life (78) and had a load of health issues (diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, kidney failure), I and almost everyone involved felt that he suffered needlessly in the end, in what basically amounted to them with-holding fluids and IV to allow him to pass away "naturally". As if being surrounded by beeping machinery, being awoken every 2 hours, and breathing through a tube was anything anyone would consider natural. I just drove down to Virginia to attend the funeral on Saturday and got back last night. I'm just glad he's at peace now.
As a result, I haven't had much time to train at all. I feel terribly out of shape and out of practice. Going to Jujitsu class tonight to get some much needed practice. |

Does anyone know where I can see a sample of tomorrow's ballot (Jackson county- Lee's Summit)? Is the combat works thing the only thing on there? |

| A Fraud no more? |
[Nov. 1st, 2009|11:58 pm] |
At least in terms of postseason performance, it's time to hold off on referring to Alex "A-Rod" Rodriguez as A Fraud. He delivered the game-winning hit in tonight's World Series game, and in his post-game interview, he deflected most of the credit to Johnny Damon and got choked up talking about JD and almost cried at the possibility of being 1 postseason win away from a World Series Championship. For all of the money ("Pay Rod") and Madonna scandals and whatever else, the guy really does love the game, too.
All bets are off when it's time to evaluate his career for the Hall of Fame. His admitted steroid ("A-Roid") use will probably be enough to bring back the A Fraud label once and for all time.
I find this depressing: Should the Yankees win the Series, this will be one of the all-time classic teams ever, right up with the Red Sox a few years ago, and former Kansas City Royal Johnny Damon will have been a key member of both teams. |

Every year, I test various candies for approval as Halloween treats. The results so far: * Kit Kats are approved (not as good as I'd remembered). * Reese's mini cups are approved (better the kids deal with all of the extra packaging than a dog-owning adult). * m&ms are approved (the chocolate doesn't melt in one's hand, but the candy shell coloring does). * Hershey's special dark mini bars are still pending a decision. Preliminary results suggest that they are good, but how good? At least another 1-2 months of research is required. |

| Public health |
[Oct. 27th, 2009|10:25 pm] |
Boy, I really am lost. All this talk of a public option, or no public option. Federal insurance company to compete with private insurance or not. Wasn't the original discussion about overhauling the US healthcare system? I was looking at something more like in the UK, or Canada. Now we seem to be talking about keeping it the same, just making sure people have insurance. Which won't work, because unless we can control health costs, the gov't (and the taxpayers) will end up paying through the nose. |

| Corporate BS |
[Oct. 26th, 2009|09:29 pm] |
And speaking of video games, what is up with all the crap Activision/Infinity Ward is trying to pull with Modern Warfare 2? I forgave CoD4's scandalously short single-player game because because I got it on sale, and because multiplayer is such a huge part of the franchise. But CoD4:2 has crossed the line. In addition to an equally short campaign, the multiplayer has now also been gutted via the removal of dedicated servers, which will decimate the modding and clan communities - the very cornerstones of the franchise's multiplayer popularity. And as if that isn't enough, Activision is selling this crippled product for $60 on PC. That is, for 10 dollars more than any other blockbuster title in my entire adult life.
I don't get it. Is Activision responding to the decline of PC gaming by deliberately trying to finish off the market for good? It's not like any sane person could expect this to turn it around. And man, it would really get my goat if they try to blame the platform when Modern Warfare 2 inevitably sells poorly on PC. It's because of pirates! Not douchebag distributors... |
